Making Inscriptions: Online Talk and Demonstration by Sculptor, Wayne Hart

Online lecture

An event forming part of the Church Monuments Society’s series of online lectures for the Spring, 2024. Everybody welcome!

Making Inscriptions

Wayne Hart, an award-winning lettercarver, typographer and sculptor, will speak to us about his training and career, and explain the craft of hand-cutting inscriptions. Wayne works with stone, wood, metal and glass and produces memorials, signage, ecclesiastical works, commemorative gifts and public art. Notable commissions include the memorials to C. S. Lewis and Sir John Gielgud for Westminster Abbey and to Edith Cavell for Norwich Cathedral, and Wayne will talk to us about the heritage of his craft. This will include a live demonstration of the traditional art of lettercutting, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Join us for this unique insight into the production of commemorative inscriptions.

Wayne Hart studied the renowned Design for Communication course at the University of Reading before doing his three-year lettercarving apprenticeship with Pip Hall in Cumbria. Hart has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards. His benefactors include the Memorial Arts Charity, the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, The Worshipful Company of Masons and the York Consortium of Conservation & Craftsmanship. In 2013, Hart won Craft & Design Magazine’s Gold Award in Specialist Media and Craft Maker of the Year. He has taught on the MA Type Design course at the University of Reading and now runs his own lettercarving courses throughout the year and gives lectures and demonstrations.
