Anyone driving along the Chertsey road might think that the church tower looks similar to some seen in the City of London, and they would be correct. It is indeed a Wren tower, transplanted when its City namesake was demolished. The transfer began towards the end of the 1930s and Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram, the Lord Bishop of London, laid the foundation stone on 11 July 1913. This year, on 09 November, All Hallows celebrates the 85th anniversary of its consecration. It was not just the tower that travelled west but a number of fixtures and fittings, notably the great reredos, similar to one Grinling Gibbons carved for St Mary Abchurch. Also, from the original church is a gloriously macabre wooden gateway elaborately carved with figures of time and death. A number of wall monuments can also be viewed, along with smaller items including sword rests and a chandelier.
The church is approximately a 10 minute walk from Twickenham railway station and the 110 bus passes the church. The 281 bus stops on the Whitton Road (Chudleigh Road stop) which is at the end of Elmcroft Way which leads to the church. Check on-line for information about local car parks and the TfL website for information about public transport. There is also free car parking on site.
