A lecture by by Professor Madeleine Gray, FRHistS, FSA, FRSA, forming part of the Church Monuments Society’s ‘Whose dead in vaulted arches lie’ series of Autumn online lectures for the season of All Hallows. Everybody welcome!
Picking up on themes from Christina Welch’s talk for the Church Monuments Society on medieval cadaver tombs last spring, this lecture looks at some more unusual Welsh cadaver tombs and shroud effigies at St Dogmaels and Tenby. There are also other Welsh examples of the art of the macabre – the Llancarfan ‘Death and the Gallant’ and a little misericord at Christ College, Brecon. Wales has a tradition of very graphic vernacular poetry on macabre themes. We will consider whether some of the most vivid medieval poetry might be evidence for lost wall paintings and tombs.
Madeleine Gray is Professor Emerita of Ecclesiastical History at the University of South Wales. She has studied the material culture of religion in Wales in the late medieval and early modern periods and is currently working on a database of medieval tomb carvings in Wales.
