Studying Church Monuments in the Archives: Antiquarians, Rare Books and Manuscripts

Our theme is the history of the study of church monuments. Join us for a day of lectures and displays hosted by the Archives & Special Collections team at the University of Leicester. Speakers will be exploring the history of studying church monuments, some of the key works produced by those historic scholars, and how their works have influenced others since. Speakers will include Richard Knowles on ‘Charles Alfred Stothard (1786-1821), Monumental Effigies and the Anna Eliza Albums’, Brian and Moira Gittos on ‘Antiquarians at Work’ in which they examine the practice of a number of scholars including Charles Boutell, Herbert Macklin, William Prideaux and others, and David Carrington on the subject of ‘Archives and Church Monument Conservation’, in which he will explain how antiquarian works are vital to the practice of conserving monuments today. After a morning of talks with a display of unique manuscripts and published material on loan from Society members, an exhibition of rare books from the collections of the University of Leicester will be on show for you to browse. Works on display will include a 1767 printing of John Weever’s Antient Funeral Monuments (1631), selected volumes from Richard Gough’s Sepulchral Monuments in Great Britain (1786-96), the two volumes of George Smyth’s The Monuments of St Pauls Cathedral and of Westminster Abbey (1827), William Dugdale’s History of St Paul’s Cathedral (1658), Browne Willis’ Survey of the Cathedral Church of Bangor (1721), Brindley & Weatherley’s Ancient Sepulchral Monuments (1887) and much, much more.
Cost: £5 members, £7 non-members
Parking: available in the University’s Freeman’s Common multi-storey car park, and/or in nearby Council and NCP car parks. If you arrive by train, the campus is approximately a 15-20 minute walk slightly up hill.
Catering: available in multiple University campus outlets, including the Library cafe (open from 8 am). Please note that no food or drinks can be brought into the lecture room or exhibition.
Access: We will meet in the Library foyer. Staff will need to let you through certain access-restricted areas at various times of the day, which will be explained in advance.
