Here is Jean Wilson’s list of the monuments (not the brasses – they will be in a separate list). We have a guided tour of these after the AGM on 22 Sept (more details of that on https://churchmonumentssociety.org/event/cms-2018-annual-general-meeting). So if you want to find out more about these monuments, come along on the day!

So here are the monuments:

South Aisle

  1. Modern plaque to Rev Augustus Powell Miller, who oversaw the restoration of the church after it was damaged in WW2.
  2. (above) Monument to Samuel Pepys
    (below) Rather nice, if battered, Gothic memorial to Rev. John Letts †1857
  1. Monument to James Deane† 1608, 3 wives & 3 children.
  1. Inscription tablet to Dr William Turner †1568
  1. Monument to Dr Peter Turner †1614
  1. Wall plaque to Sir John Mennes †1671

 

Chancel

  1. (a) Fragments of the monument to Sir John Radcliffe †1568 and Lady Anne Radcliffe †1585
    (b) Base, with inscription and brackets from the monument to Jeffrie Kerby †1632 and his daughter Susan † 1634
  1. Wall-plaque to Jane Humberstone †1694
  1. Elizabeth Pepys †1669
  1. Monument to Andrew †1610 & Paul †1616 Bayning.

North Aisle

  1. Monument to Peter Capponi †1582.
  1. WWI parish memorial, signed by William Goscombe John.
  1. Two memorial plaques to D.Alfred Povah, rector 1860-1901
  1. Standing wall-monument with standing figure to Sir Andrew Riccard †1672

Nave

  1. Rather boring wall-tablet to an interesting man: John Watts †1789, President of the Council of New York before American Independence.
  1. Good inscription cartouche to Sir William Ogbourne †1734
  1. Elizabeth Gore †1698

Baptistery: mostly fragmentary monuments retrieved and repositioned after bombing of WWII.

How to contribute

We welcome contributions on a range of topics related to monuments and commemoration. Initial enquiries about substantial articles for possible publication in the Journal should be sent to the Editor. Shorter articles and news items can be published in the Newsletter. We also welcome less formal contributions for Monument of the Month and the Blog.
