More about this monument

St George’s, Frankwell, Shrewsbury, has a memorial of particular interest in that it includes the name of a man shot for ‘desertion’. There has been a great deal of coverage of these tragic cases, most of them people who we would now diagnose with post-traumatic stress disorder. After a determined campaign, they have been officially pardoned and are (for example) commemorated at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas (more on this at  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_at_Dawn_Memorial ).

Denis Blakemore was the son of the headmaster at Bicton and he is commemorated at both Bicton and Frankwell, presumably at the request of his family. More about him at http://shropshirewarmemorials.blogspot.com/2008/09/shot-at-dawn.html
