More about this monument

You may have noticed that we have not had a Monument of the Month for May or June. While our web site was being reconstructed, it would have confused things to have new posts going up. Now that we have our lovely new site, this is a catch-up on some of the war memorials that people have sent us.

This is the Roll of Honour in the parish church of Arthog, across the Mawddach estuary from Barmouth. This one is actually a bit of a puzzle. It says it records the names of ‘Men of this parish who served in the Great War 1914-1918’ and marks with a cross those who were actually killed. But elsewhere in the village is a war memorial recording rather more names: see http://www.mawddachestuary.co.uk/warmemorials/#Arthog. It does look as though the Roll of Honour commemorates the members of the congregation, and possibly not those from Nonconformist chapels. Horeb Chapel kept its own Roll of Honour, a Book of Remembrance which is now in the Dolgellau record office: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/60677.
