We have been told about a new publication: Exeter Cathedral memorials with links to Empire by Peter Wingfield-Digby
This illustrated book, which has been self-published, describes some 63 memorials in Exeter Cathedral with links to Empire. The memorials encompass a wide range of experience: soldiers and sailors, missionaries, explorers, colonial administrators, people employed by the East India Company, and – almost inevitably – some connected with slave plantations in the Caribbean. Each entry in the book displays the memorial of interest, and provides a brief introduction to the person’s life. The memorials are divided up according to the part of the world in which the person (or some close relative) was involved; there are sections for India, the rest of Asia and the Pacific, the Caribbean, North and South America, and Africa.
The author spent his working life as an international statistical consultant, living and working in developing countries. Since retiring, he has been a guide and steward at Exeter Cathedral for ten years.
The book, priced at £10, may be purchased online or from some independent bookshops. The ISBN is 978-1-3999-1655-4. Alternatively, to purchase directly, please contact the author at pwdigby@btinternet.com
