Monuments from St Lawrence Church, Brentford, Middlesex

The Grade 2* listed church of St Lawrence in Brentford, Middx., was closed in 1961. It is being redeveloped for retail use as part of the Brentford Waterside development.

The church had some important memorials including one by Robert Flaxman. The monuments were removed in 1977 for safe keeping. Some are in the Museum of London – but what has happened to the rest? We have been sent this list:

Inscription                 Neer the middle of this place is interr’d the body of Mistress ALICE HAWLEY, widow and relict of JAMES HAWLEY, Esq.(whose memorial is opposite) [ ] She departed this life the [ ] day of November, Anno Dom. 16[18] [ ].

Inscription                 Mrs. CURTIS CULLUM, late wife of THOMAS CULLUM, Gent. Eldest daughter of HENRY HAWLEY, Esq. and ALICE his wife. She died in child bed ye 8th day of February ten days after the birth of their daughter ANNA whom she left issue being their first and only child. Anno Domini 1700, aetat suae 26.

Inscription                 To the memory of THOMAS FOXALL, Esq. late of Twickenham in the County of Middlesex, who died January 7th, 1796. And whose remains are deposited in a vault, in this churchyard. Also of ROBERT SCOTT, Esq. M.D., late of Twickenham, who departed this life February 7th 1829 aged 67 years.

Description                Elegant monument of marble in the form of a sarcophagus, supported by figures of Faith and Hope
Inscription                 Sacred to the memory of WILLIAM HOWELL EWIN, L.L.D., who died 29th November, 1804 in the 74th year of his age. Also of his sister SUSANNA HOWELL EWIN who died January 12th,1808, in the 76th year of her age.

Inscription                 In memory of RACHEL ye wife of CHRISTOPHER CLITHEROW of Boston House in this County, Esqr., eldest daughter of JAMES PAULE of Braymick in the County of Berks. Esqr., [ ] died October ye 23, 1714, aged 40 and had 15 children born and christened; 6 of them died infants and [ ] her 9 survived. In memory of the sd. CHRISTO. CLITHEROW, who died Aug. 20th, 1727, aged 6[ ].

Description                Marble monument surmounted by two separate coats of arms and a crest

Inscription                 In expectation of a blessed resurrection lyeth buried in this chancel the body of JAMES CLITHEROW of Boston House in this parish, Esq. He departed this life ye 25th November, 1682, leaveing 2 sons JAMES & CHRISTOPHER and 2 daughters JANE & ELIZABETH. JANE married JOHN JENNYNS of Hayes in the County of Middlesex, Esq. ELIZABETH unmarried afterwards wife of BARNHAM son and heir apparent of Sr. NATH. POWELL Bart. Here also lyeth the body of ELIZABETH, relict of ye sd. JAMES CLITHEROW, who departed this life ye 24th of Ap., 1688. She was the daughter of ThOS. BARKER of Chiswick in the said County Esq., 3rd wife of the said JAMES CLITHEROW and mother of ye sd. CHRISTOPHER & ELIZABETH.

Initial enquiries about substantial articles for possible publication in the Journal should be sent to the Editor. Shorter articles and news items can be published in the Newsletter.
