TEMPLE OLD KIRK FRIENDS

Temple Old Kirk Friends is a small charity set up in February 2020 to stimulate interest in, and fund the conservation of, the Old Kirk and graveyard in Temple Village, Midlothian.
Temple Old Kirk, now a ruin, was founded in the 14th century; it is situated in a beautiful wooded valley beside the South Esk. It was built on the site of the Preceptory of the Knights Templar at Balantrodoch, which until the dissolution of that Order in the years after 1307 was the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Scotland. In the graveyard are many remarkable headstones, some dating back to the late 17th century.
Our purpose is to bring the Old Kirk and its gravestones alive, and to encourage appreciation of their beauty and significance among historians, genealogists, and the public generally. We need to secure funding for the repair, maintenance and long-term preservation of the Old Kirk and its gravestones, and develop an ongoing programme of activities to promote the historical, environmental and aesthetic value of Old Kirk and its surroundings.
To strengthen our group of Trustees, we are seeking people interested in sharing their time and experience to work with us to raise money to conserve the Old Kirk, to develop material for a range of audiences, and to help organise workshops, visits and tours. We are particularly keen to recruit people with skills in conservation architecture, financial accounting and community development.
Trustee meetings are held either online or in person in Temple Village.

We welcome contributions on a range of topics related to monuments and commemoration. Initial enquiries about substantial articles for possible publication in the Journal should be sent to the Editor. Shorter articles and news items can be published in the Newsletter. We also welcome less formal contributions for Monument of the Month and the Blog.
