‘Head and shoulders above a stone coverlet’

By CMS in Recent publications

Our friend Christopher Howse (you will have seen his tweets @BeardyHowse) writes in today’s Telegraph about the intriguing monument to Sir William de Bayous and his wife in St Stephen’s Church, Careby, Lincs. The article then turns to a review of our Vice-President Sally Badham’s meticulous and illuminating study of the semi-effigial monuments of Lincolnshire in The Monuments Man, a collection of essays celebrating the life and achievements of the late Jerome Bertram. ‘The redoubtable Sally Badham’, Howse says, points out the the coverlet partly concealing their bodies is not a bed-covering but the funeral pall, and this gives us a valuable insight into the rituals surrounding deathbed and funerals in the Middle Ages.
