We are now announcing our memorial event for Dr Julian Litten, leading historian of funerary practices and a former President of CMS.
It will be held at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist with Our Lady and St Lawrence, at Thaxted in Essex.
The churchyard at Thaxted is the last resting place of Dr Litten. We are offering a day of lectures on subject matter that was close to Dr Litten’s heart. These include:
- Dr Jean Wilson: The fashion in shrouds: or, what should I wear on my death-bed? With remarks on coffins, and other funeral paraphernalia
- Dr Roger Bowdler: A Golgotha of Skulls and Bones: The Charnel Tomb in Stuart England
- Dr Adam White: on John Donne (d. 1631) and his shroud tomb by Nicholas Stone in St Paul’s Cathedral
