St Michaels Church Great Badminton
Badminton Estate
We will start at 2:00pm at St Michaels Church Great Badminton. The church is a Grade 1 listed building in an Italianate style, and is physically connected to the south east of Badminton House. Outside we see plain stonework with round-headed Georgian windows and a west tower that has urns in the place of corner pinnacles. The elaborate interior of the church has recently undergone a restoration project
The church contains a collection of classical monuments, including 3 large ones to the first four Dukes of Beaufort (including work by Rysbrack and Grinling Gibbons) and wall monuments to the 5th to 9th Dukes and other members of the Somerset family. There is also a chantry chapel (in the south-west corner of the nave) to the first Duchess which includes an armorial chest tomb.
As stated above, the church is on the Badminton Estate. Access details will be given in advance of our visit.
We will also be visiting a second church nearby. This will be St Mary, Marshfield, where we will have tea. St Mary’s has a large collection of monuments, including wall tablets and inscription brasses from the late 17th to the early 20th century.
The event will finish at about 4:30pm.
