The series of CMS Walking Tours – i.e. those to see monuments within a city or town not requiring coach transport – continues with a visit to the five medieval churches in Stamford, Lincolnshire on Saturday 5th October 2019. Not for the faint-hearted, we shall be visiting five churches in five hours, each with a good 20-30 minute walk between, so please wear suitable shoes. We start with St Martin’s, High Street St Martin, whose huge north transept contains a galaxy of monuments to the Cecils from 1598 to 1858, including one by Cornelius Cure to William Cecil, Lord Burghley (d.1598) and another mighty piece to John, 5th Earl Exeter (d.1700) by P-E Monnot of Rome. A brisk walk to St Mary’s, St Mary Street brings us to the outstanding canopied free-standing effigial tomb of Sir David Phillips (d.1506). After lunch, which is not included in the cost, we walk to St John the Baptist, St John Street to see its collection of C15 brasses and small wall-monument to John Booth (d.1799) by Coade & Seely of Lambeth. The near-by church of All Saints’, All Saints’ Place, has a collection of six C15/C16 brasses and a representative collection of C18 by the Bingham family of sculptors of Peterborough. Our last church, St George, St George’s Square, contains a variety of monuments from the C14 to the C18, including a huge monument by John Bacon to Sir Richard Cust (d.1734) and other members of his family. A short walk takes us back to Stamford railway station where we take the 18.30 train back to London, arriving King’s Cross at 19.23.

16.45 Visit St George’s church.
17.30 Depart St Georges’s for railway station.
18.00 Train back to London.
19.23 Train arrives at King’s Cross.
The cost of the Walking Tour is £20 for CMS members or £25 for non-members which covers the cost of the donations to the five churches and the notes. Travelling and lunch costs are not included.
