Last Rites: Funerals and Funerary Monuments

29-31 January 2021

Joint event organised by the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education and the Church Monuments Society

This weekend school will provide an opportunity to explore the development of funeral rites and the commemoration of the dead in England from the middle ages to the nineteenth century. The main focus is on three periods – the late middle ages, the period between the Reformation and the Civil War, and the Victorian era – for each of which a talk on funerary practices is paired with one on commemorative monuments. A particular feature of the programme is the possibility of discussion with and between speakers who approach the subject from different disciplines.

Friday evening

ALEKS MCCLAIN The development of monumental commemoration in the 10th to 12th centuries: from standing crosses to cross slabs

Saturday all day including evening

PAUL BARNWELL The rites of death in the later middle ages: from death bed to charnel house

SALLY BADHAM Interpreting images of life and death on medieval monuments

HANNAH CLEUGH Did the corpse disappear? Reforming burial in 16th- and 17th-century England

ADAM WHITE Monumental funerals and funereal monuments in the Elizabethan and early Stuart periods

ROGER KUIN Colours of continuity: the heraldic funeral

Sunday morning and lunchtime

JULIAN LITTEN The English funeral, 1837-1901
