In view of the Covid-19 virus epidemic, we have regretfully decided to postpone the Derbyshire excursion. We plan to rearrange it for the same time next year. We hope that those who have registered will feel able to join us in the spring of 2021. If however you want to reclaim your fee, please contact the Treasurer via the contact form and he will arrange a refund.

Robin Draper is taking us to Derbyshire, to see monumental treasures from industrial Chesterfield (don’t forget that famous spire!), through the Chatsworth estate and on to the edge of the peaks at Bakewell. We can expect to see 3-dimensional work from the 14th to 17th century. There will be brasses too, and as is usually the case, the 18th and 19th centuries will be represented.
Chesterfield is served from London by East Midlands Trains over the the former Midland main line, with services from St Pancras station. It is also served by Cross-Country train services on the south west to north east rail axis, via Birmingham New Street, Sheffield and Leeds. Please refer to www.nationalrail.co.uk , or train operator websites for details of journeys and ticketing.
At 10:00, we will walk the short distance from Chesterfield Station to the church of St Mary and all Saints, where below and to the south of the twisted spire, we will find the Foljambe monuments, with documented work by Harper and Morecock, and Garrat Hollemans.
The plan after that is to join the coach to see the following:
Edensor, St Peter. Here we have an amazing monument to the two sons of Bess of Hardwick. At the top of the churchyard, there is the grave of a Mitford Sister;
Bakewell, All Saints. There is a 14th century wall monument that is about 200 years ahead of its time, and the south transept houses the monumentally rich Vernon Chapel, and some wall mounted brasses. There is also a rich collection of ancient stone fragments;
Youlgreave, All Saints. A small but fine collection of monuments including a small knight;
Wingerworth, All Saints. Formerly a church with a separate Mausoleum, both now joined by a north extension of 1963/4. There are also ledger stones and we will take tea here before returning to Chesterfield Station (scheduled arrival at 5:15pm).
The cost to CMS, MBS and Mausolea and Monuments Trust members is £30 (£35 to non-members). This includes the cost of a coach, donations to participating churches and for tea.
Lunch is not included, but the centre of Bakewell is rich with pubs, cafes, chip shops and other food outlets.
