A call to churches – participation at your local church during London Open House and Heritage Open Day festivals

By CMS in CMS news, Events

When one looks through the lists of buildings open to the public during the London Open House or Heritage Open Day festivals in September, churches predominate.  While many are open throughout the year, this festival time brings opportunities to visit those that are rarely so. Often, as in the case with my local parish church, local history experts make themselves available to support the parish communities with their wealth of knowledge; we too, as Church Monuments fans, have much to offer. These festivals are a rare opportunity to introduce the public to the many interesting facets of church monuments, and how important it is that they be cared for.

So, if you know of a church near you that is opening up for the London Open House and Heritage Open Day festivals, it would be good to get involved if you can in some way. By learning about a sole or group of monuments – from both artistic and historical viewpoints – you can help the church communities who are opening up, while flying the flag for Church Monuments and the Society. To find out your nearest local church open in September, check the LOH and HOD’s websites at https://open-city.org.uk/open-house-festival and https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/ to make contact.  Beyond giving your time, it is most likely that you will enjoy the experience of conversing with the public, who often bring their own viewpoints, which can be most revealing!
